Over the past 18 years of being an agent in Charlotte, North Carolina, I have discovered an interesting ditty. Midwesterners and Northerners love their basements! They are surprised to find that when they come to the Queen city to buy a new home that homes with basements do not run plentiful here. Oh, while we do have them, many times especially in the older neighborhoods such as Dilworth, Elizabeth, Midwood, Myers Park, Eastover, Cotswold, and even Uptown, they are just cellars. These cellars were originally designed to house the old coal furnaces and were very primitive and small.
The Basement lover will find happiness in our lake communities of Lake Norman, Lake Wylie and Mountain Island. These areas have many new and expansive water front homes that offer large walkout/daylight basements. There are also some other communities of the Charlotte metro area that have a rolling topography that are suitable for basement homes. These areas are primarily in the South, Southeast and Southwest sections just outside of the city such as Matthews, and have been heavily developed since the early eighties on up to today. Some of the developers took advantage of these hilly sites and built new homes that offered walk-out basements for additional bedrooms, media rooms, in-laws suites and garages. So if you are moving to Charlotte or are already here, and want a home with a great basement, they are available…don’t give up the search!!!
